It would be very nice if you could drag a file from the local or remote panes onto a folder icon in the other pane to upload or download to it. As it is now, you must chdir to a directory before you can upload a file to it. If that directory has a lot of files in it, it can take a long time to download the directory listing. It seems like it would be relatively simple to implement. Other FTP clients, like Bullet Proof FTP, let you do that.

FileZilla, which I gave up couple months ago but got very good recently and I'm now back with it.

But I have 1 little gripe that wants to be fixed. The option of filezilla to overwrite are

overwrite overwrite if newer resume rename skip

but I want "if upload" and "if download". Usually uploading can be overwritten without asked for me, but downloading without asking may cause my newer files get overwritten, so those options are quite necessary.

It will be perfect if you can mix "if upload" and "if newer" combinations just like it had with CuteFTP. SmartFTP did have "if upload" but not with the combination.

FileZilla, I have been thinking of one of the best FTP software is getting close to the best choice for me. Great work.

In the case of there's files already existing on target directory in the transfer queue, but not at first position in the queue, and FileZilla Client is minimized in the systray :

When the file which already exist is pick in the queue, the dialog box (overwrite, resume, etc.) isn't show and "stay in the systray".

It's only when restoring FileZilla to a window that we see this dialog box.

So it could be a long time before launch the transfer.

Is it possible to always show these dialog box even when FileZilla is minimized ?

If the connection to an FTP server has been lost (due to timeout for example) it would be convenient if pressing the F5 refresh button would re-establish the FTP connection. I know there's a toolbar button for this, but I've got used to using F5 to re-establish connections with other client programs!

In the last release the Refresh option refreshes both the local and the remote folders. It will be nice to be able to refresh these independently, for exemple with the right mouse button.

Can there be an option so that when a transfer has been completed, it remains in the queue window with a "Completed" status. Then you can have a in the right- click menu to say "Clear all" and "Clear completed", etc.

Any chance of bandwidth limiting? Its the only major thing I can see that may be needed. On my CM connection I'd like to restrict my download speed so I can do other stuff at the same time.

If I transfer an entire directory (drag&drop the folder icon) from local to remote then when the transfer is completed the remote site listing remains in the place where the last file was transferred to.

I think it would be better to return the remote listing back to the original directory prior to the transfer.

I know its only a small nitpicking thing, but a sound on successful login would be a godsend. For when you are trying to login to a busy server and want to know when you finally do.

A virtual path is a good attribute when using "Show relative paths". I'm trying to use this, but when "Show relative paths" is checked I can only see my HOME DIRECTORY. With virtual path I can set c:\other to be /other or /anything in my ftp tree. The "Resolve windows shortcuts" only works when the link is above my home path. With Virtual Path we can map other paths not above the home path.

It will easily to do job automation and conjuction filezilla into our scrips.

Can the order for startup events be changed to give immediate user feedback. I frequently operate on a Windows machine that has an occasional VPN connection.

There are usually 7 remote directories defined that

are only VPN reachable. When the VPN is not active, Filezilla spends about 1 minute waiting on timeouts before it displays anything. This leads to doubts about whether it has been clicked properly, etc. Which leads to double and triple starts of Filezilla and that just makes things worse.

Possible solutions:

1) Put up a splash screen immediately. All I need is

some indication that things are starting.

2) Put up the basic Filezilla display structure, but

with neither the local nor the remote directory information populated. That plus a cursor wait icon would be enough to know that things are working.

3) Provide an option to eliminate partitions from the

local directory structure. This would suit my use since I only use one partition for transfers. It might not suit other people very well.

Creating and removing these network devices for every startup and shutdown of the VPN is not a practical solution. They must always be there. Windows eventually times out when you attempt to use one when the VPN is not running, so the problem is the long delays from programs like Filezilla that attempt to check every single mounted partition during startup.

The ability to download files also on shared folders. The local site window could show additionnaly to the local PC the neighborhood (and why not even the desktop) like the windows file explorer does. Similarly it should be possible to enter paths like 'PC_NAME/Folder in the local path window.

FileZilla is a great program !

I just testing FileZilla. I think it's a very good application for me. I need to upload from a PC to an Unix system. My problem is that file on Unix keep upper case. Is it possible to add an option to force lower case upload for the filename (like in ws-ftp).

The only thing I'd really like to see is the ability to drag a file to the desktop and have it download it to there, and vice versa (drag a local file to the remote file list and have it upload where I drop it). If I could drag a file out of the Filezilla window to the desktop I'd consider the program just about perfect.

By the way, thank you for a great product! Even without any changes it's absolutely fantastic - thank you for making it available!

gFTP has a nice feature: "Multithreading"

It simulates Multithreading which means that you can download some files and in the same time you can freely browse through the FTP-folders. In the background gFTP stops the download while you are browsing and then it resumes the downloads automatically when the user does nothing.

At this moment you have to open Filezilla a second time and you have to create a second connection to the server.

It would be great to have the possibility to translate (I prefer from Eng) to other language (in my case Italian) to have menu, messages, labels in the preferred language other than English or whatelse.

I would like to see an option in the settings for file viewing/editing to be able to automatically use the default Windows file association instead of having to associate each file extention within the program.

I would like to be able to give my new user accounts a temporary password and let the user change the password remotely.

Greetings, It would be very handy if I could see which tranfer type is set. Now I have to go to the menu (transfer->Tranfer type) to see which is selected. Buttons on the toolbar to change the tranfer type would be handy. Ther could be 3 buttons (one for each type).De color of the button could indicate if that trnafer type is selected.

FileZilla = AWESOME! This is by far the best freebie FTP client out there!

As a new user, the toolbar buttons seem a little less than ideally situated. Plus, the mouseover description only shows in the status bar (at the bottom of the screen), so it's hard to notice down there.

For starters, I would love to see ToolTip style help text, where it would "popup", ala microsoft. Another possibility may be to show the help text to the right of the buttons (there's plenty of room). Yet another option may be to place the buttons at the bottom of the screen (like WSFTP), where they're closer to the status bar...

I'd also love to see them rearranged (or rearrangeable by the end user). My preferred order would be to move the "view options" (show local, show remote, show queue, show messages) to the end of the bar, just before help, so that the connection-related options were all together. Then move the disconnect/reconnect options to the beginning, just after the site-manager button. Here's my complete preferred order:

Site manager Disconnect Reconnect --------- Refresh Process Cancel --------- Local treeview Remote treeview (and use an 'R', rather than an 'F') Queue Message Log --------- Help

Any chance we could get a drop-down menu somewhere on the GUI, with a list of all sites in the Site Manager, for a "quick-connect" option that doesn't involve opening the site manager?

I would most prefer to see it integrated into the existing "site manager" button on the toolbar, with a drop-down arrow to the right of the button, similar to how Microsoft groups buttons in most of its products.

Next preference would be on the quick connect toolbar, perhaps over top of the current "Address" box. Although the quick connect bar is pretty wide already, so adding much to it may be a problem.

Related to this request, if the Quick Connect bar could remember the last few most recently used addresses (and usernames most likely) it would be even more handy, if for example I'll be connecting to the same set of sites for a couple days and then never again...

Some FTP programs let you send raw FTP commands. This often comes in very handy.

Convert filename characters that would be illegal on the destination platform to some other character. For example other ftp packages rename the file, converting ":" (colon, in the source filename) to "_" (underscore, in the destination filename) when transferring to DOS/Windows, which does not allow ":" in a file's name.

Currently, when I use this package to transfer such a file, the destination filename is truncated at the point of the invalid character and the file contains 0 bytes. The package claims the file was transferred successfully, but it wasn't. So this is also a bug.

Rename files, converting characters that would be illegal on the destination host to acceptable characters.

As an example, when transferring a file whose name contains ":" (colon) from unix to a PC running Windows NT, FileZilla truncates the filename just prior to the colon and writes no bytes. It also claims in the status window that the transfer was successful. (I've reported this as a bug.)

Simply converting all such illegal characters to "_" (underscore) would be ok, since that is what some other FTP clients do. If you want to go a step beyond that, you might allow the user to specify the character to use or even allow a mapping table.

An option to store all user information and settings under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE rather than HKEY_CURRENT_USER. This will help if you were to make it a windows 2000 service as well :)

It has been implemented in the remote view to remember the paths you have visited. It would be nice if a drop down list is also provided for the local sites.

Furthermore, I also hope filezilla have "desktop", "my documents", etc in the local tree view just like in Win2k explore. It would be handy as I often download files to these places.

It would be great if you can add a "Conection Retry" in FileZilla (controlled with a timer), in the site manager and in the QuickConnect mode.

I'd like to see a setting for the default double click action on both local and remote files. I'd like to choose if I want to upload/download the file, open it or edit it on double click. This option can came on the Local file list/Remote file list option page so you can set different options for local and remote files.

A couple additions:

1. Remember the window size that Filezilla was at when

closed for the next session.

2. Remember if the display was modified. E.g., the

Queue section stays closed.

I'm desperately in need of transfering a heap of files in misc folders (serverside) to other folders (serverside).

I need TWO views of the *same* server.

That way files can be dragged and dropped from folder to folder on the same server. I have found only ONE program that can do it and it's a commercial buggy memory hog...

I can now (2.0.0a) right-click on a remote file and open my relevant editor. Cool. But I would like FileZilla to automatically upload the edited file to the ftp-server (in the background) each time I save my changes. That is not yet possible as far as I can see.

a little function to indicate the allowed size on the server (quota). The actual size of files and the maximum size. it's great when we upload big file, and we have no more place !

It could be very useful if FileZilla showed the total number of items (files and dirs, separated) in both local and remote dirs. So I could spot if anything is missing from one side or the other, when putting a web site in sync with local mirror.

When some items are selected, it could change to show the number of selected items.

I upgraded my FileZilla 2.0.0a to 2.1.0a but I cannot figure out how to import the old SiteManager I had exported to a .txt file right before uninstalling FileZilla 2.0.0a - I guess that it's not possible anymore. Therefore I would suggest to add the option to /import/ older SiteManager-.txt-files... there is no need for exporting them as well, but just importing.

Adjustable Upload / Download bandwidth limit, and file sorting by file type on remote view, or sort by extension on both sides

I've been trying to get filezilla to work with a ftp server that has the control connection encrypted but not the data connection, I was not able to get it to work, as filezilla requires the data connection to be encrypted.

The kind of setup I was testing is found on some servers and also if you want to encrypt the control connection of a non secure server using a ssl wrapper.

I think that making filezilla automatically detect if the data connection is crypted or not and have the user aprove non encrypted connections would be good, another alternative could be to have an option to assume that the data connections of a server are not encrypted and when this option is on, unencrypted data is allowed.

Hope you like the idea and implement it and keep on making your program the best windows ftp client ;-)

BTW: what about a Linux port?

Right-clicking an active transfer in the queue pane should bring up a cancel option. Otherwise, there is no way to cancel an active transfer excpt by exiting FileZilla

Can we have the site list in a separted file that its path can be specified in the settings? because I use Ghost to make image of my system partition and would like to keep the site list after system recovery.

Should be usefull to have 2 remote connection open at the same time and, then, the possibility of transfert between each other remote server without first manually copy files to local machine for than transfert them to the other server.

An interesting feature that I saw in FTP Voyager was the SysOp chat -- it let you establish a chat session between you and the server SysOp upon a certain server request.

When you set the number of connections, the legal value is apparently 1-10. However, you can enter up to 99 in the field. Entering 11 or more silently drops it back to 2, but exits the menu.

Could you perhaps make a list button of 1 to 10, or stop and complain if someone enters 11 or greater (or just allow more threads? Though I don't know if more, especially not 99, makes sense).

As a somewhat naive user, I found that I was picking sftp using ssh2 to do my transfers, and the connect was failing to a server set up in a very vanilla default manner. It took me a while to find I had to set the port to 22. In other programs (for example, PuTTY), the default port number changes based on if you pick telnet or ssh protocol, though you can subsequently change it.

The simplest fix would be just to put a text note on the screen like "use 21 for default ftp, 22 for default sftp." But I'd prefer that the transfer type come first on the screen, and the port changed properly to match, though the user could then tab to the port and change it for non-default situations.

Allow user of filezilla to move files to another directory on server

Having to right click files and select edit is very tedious. Being able to drag the file from either pane (local or remote) into another application would be a major improvement.

Also the option to assign what action (ie. transfer, open or edit) double click performs would be nice - and would partially negate my drag and drop request, since I would simply assign double click to be edit file. I would then always use the drag and drop capability already implemented between local and remote panes.

Could you please implement a feature such that FileZilla Server, if not behind a firewall or router, can emulate settings for passive mode in such a way that file requests done in passive mode will pass through?

Please add these features to the server: quotas, multiple ports (ie use different ports for certain user names), and speed limiting (ie saying that a user can only use x Kbps).

I have also tried out other servers like GuildFTPd. It has many features, but its slow, bloated, and has other major problems with it. When i have switched to FileZilla server, I have 0 problems so far.

Are there any plans to support remote-to-remote transfers? with some ftp clients (eg, Novell's Rapid Filer), you can open two remote windows, no local, and perform transfers directly between the hosts without passing though the local machine - as you can imagine if your control console is on dialup, and the two remote machines are both on the same remote site, the time saving there is considerable.

I think that a very fine addition to this great client would be the per-site bookmark capability, as it was in cuteftp... you could quickly jump from a dir to another with browsing the tree... you should save it in a XML db file...

A Feature that I have been looking for a long time is a simple switch in the toolbar to browse synchronously or not. If I wish to, FileZilla executes my directory action on client and server side, so I do not have to click twice everywhere. This is very useful when uploading/maintainning websites, because you alsways have to perform the same directory changes on both sides. Probably FileZilla could also ask to create a directory if it does not exist on both sides. regards, Philip

Please add "home", "change directory", and "make directory" buttons next to the remote directory path field, and the latter two for the local directory.

The home button would send a "cd ~" or equivalent to the remote system.

I would like to see the ability to use public key authentication with SSH, compatbile with PuTTY's Pagent ssh-agent.

I'd like to see the ability to import PuTTY sessions, including the public key information if that feature is implemented.

The speed/bandwidth limit could be a nice feature for people like me that want to set a personal FTP server for interchange files with friends using a DSL/Cable connection. In these environments is almost a need limit the upload speed in the server, because if all the bandwidth is taken by the FTP clients, the navigation and file downloading is sluggish.

I think that a global limit is enough (like in the xitami web server).

I think in the 'Download Status' (the bottom of filezilla), an option of 'only show file name and 'show file name with directories' is very useful. Becoz when I download a file with long folder name, I need to expend the width for a long while to see the file name. Thanks a lot.

There are some cases where you don't need any security for ftp passwords, e.g. because only you have access to the computer. It would be nice to have a checkbox in the Settings called "UnHide ftp passwords". If you check it, the passwords in SiteManager or in QuickConnect become visible.

It would be nice to be able to bookmark different directories on a site, so you didn't have to browse around a large server every time to get from your the login folder to one of the many different folders you always use.

example:

login folder could be the users home directory which he often needs to access, and thus have set up as default.

but same user could often be working in other directories far away in the directory structure. if he could bookmark this he could navigate the server fast and easy instead of as now slow and cumbersome.

Would it be possible to auto-start SSL if it's available without asking the user?

I searched for days, but I haven't found an open source sftp client that doesn't suck. Filezilla is very reliable and I would love to see support for sftp in it!

This is a big problem for me because my isp (i'm in Italy) uses the dsl technology also for phone calls (it uses voip), so if i can't limit the speed the call is disturbed or i can't be called. If you Import Settings ... and point the dialogue at a previously saved Queue ... umm ... well ... it kinda trashes all your settings :(

You could probably protect me from myself. Presumably FileZilla could tell the difference between a Filezilla XML Queue file, and a Filezilla XML Settings file.

Three related suggestions, from my experience of using FZ to do directory synchronisation tasks...

1. Skip-filter. Load up a queue, and filter it so that

files that would be Skipped are subtracted from the queue leaving a list of files that should be transferred. (Would provide an opportunity to prioritise the order of files to be transferred, for instance)

2. Dryrun. As above, but for other File Overwrite

settings. Ability to find out in advance of transfer what would be transferred.

3. Transfer Logfile. Would be handy to be able to

generate a logfile of a transfer session. (Indeed, generate a named file, or append to existing file)

Users should be organized into "global" and "local" pools. Local pools of users (a "site") would be considered unique from other local sites by differentiating based on the ip address.. Global users would be able to connect to any address and login, as it is now. In simple language, add ip-based server support. Right now there is just one pool of users.. I have a need to allow duplicate username connecting to different IP's on the same machine. For those of you familiar with it, the way Serv-U handles it is roughly what I am talking about.

Why don't leave the directory in top of the file listing when we choose the Sort by Last Modified/Date?
