Tilde (~) for home directory in Local site does not work

Description
If I type /tmp/ in Local site, it works fine.
if I then type ~ in Local site, it says:
'/tmp/~' does not exist or cannot be accessed.
It seems to look for ~ as a subdirectory of the current directory.
This is on Filezilla 3.7.3

In every other Linux program I can just type ~ or ~/something/ and it will go there.
