So facing this error from couple of days,

initailly in the logs on the client - 234 Using authentication type TLS Status: Initializing TLS... and then I get the error of Error: Connection timed out after 40 seconds of inactivity Error: Could not connect to server

If you have two instances of FZ open (eg you might have on two computers) and one fetches a directory listing before the other has finished uploading a file, when you download that file (certainly after timeout) FZ doesn't refetch the latest (final) size but assumes what it has is correct, and the ETA is incorrect. I think certainly once it's passed the projected size it should realise and fetch the correct size and the ETA should be updated, however it may be better in addition if it could check the size before downloading if: the timestamp of the file is close to when the directory was listed and the session had not uploaded it there, as that's a sure sign the size might be incorrect.

First upgrade was to 3.10.0.0, picked up a virus from 3rd party download that knocked out Norton (Ticket #10029), that problem has been resolved, the upgrade to 3.10.0.1. still not working:

Each time I update FileZilla, it gets unpinned from the Windows 10 start menu, and I have to pin it again.

I update using the regular procedure: when I get the notification, I click on the "update now" button and follow the wizard.

I entered "Notepad.exe" as edit software to use for editing. When I ask to edit an .html file it uses the default browser to display the file and impossible to edit the text

1. Download a file.

5. Filezilla offers to upload the file. It goes to the new folder, without any way to change back to the original one.

Expected result: Upload the file to the folder it came from.

Context menu to "Edit" a file on the local site window is grayed out if not connected to a remote site. "Open" works but doesn't use the defined editor. Once connected to a remote site the Local Site Window "Edit" option becomes available.

It's great to see the 'Edit' option appear on the right-click menu, as it was with Filezilla v2.

However I am having a problem opening PHP and ASP files on my Vista system. Both of these file types are associated with Textpad on my system, and if I double-click them in Explorer they load up in Textpad. But if I right-click a local file in Filezilla and select Edit, I get errors.

Hello, In previous version 3.34.0 it was possible to edit/delete:download from the search module. With the version downloaded this morning 3.35.0 it is not the case anymore. Is it a bug or normal behaviour due to a chnage of Policy ? See attachment. Rgds.

I edited a file on my Server, saved it and tried to upload it again. It took way to long, so i closed FileZilla. Before its closed it ask me to transfer the file which i edieted before to the server. Dont mind if you press yes or no. The file is completly empty on the Server if you run FileZilla again and look for the file.

These steps will reproduce the problem:

1. Establish a FTP connection to a server.
2. Edit a file on the server by right clicking it and choosing "View/Edit": File opens in your editor.
3. Change the edited file with a script language like PHP: The editor doesn't display the changed file! Even if you choose "View/Edit" again, the old version gets displayed.

If you download the file to your HDD, you see the changes.

When I click View/Edit a file on the server it opens in Notepad++ for me. When I edit the file and save, it does not save back to the server. However, when I close Filezilla it asks me if I really want to quit. Whatever I answer it pops up the File has changed window and will save the file to the server. I just updated to 3.59.0 this morning and this started happening.

I suddenly edited a text file from local drive panel while a remote ftp session was open on the remote panel, after saving the file locally filezilla prompted me to upload the file after I saved it, meanwhile it was not related to the remote ftp I opened nor downloaded from it.

This might be a bug.

Dear Sir/Madam, I donwnloaded the free File Zilla from your website and also, for comparison, the shareware trial version of Smart FTP.

Whereas the process of uploading files and deletion of files is quicker in File Zilla, Editing of files is very cumbersome.

I have FileZilla running, the latest released version 3.2.2.1. I am using Vista Home Premium Service Pack1. When i try to open a file in the local directory, it says "The file <filename> can not be opened: The associated program <fullpath of program and filename> could not be found.". I used "Edit->Settings" and changed the "File Editing" to use "Use Custom Editor" and entered a different editor path (it was pointing to an older version of editplus and i changed to WebExpression). but when i try to open the file, it gives me the same message with the name of the previous editor. I played with various settings on the "File Editing" configuration window but it has no effect, i get the same error regardless. I also cleared the private data and this had no effect. i also have restarted the application and this also did not have any effect. I also changed the file association for the given file, at the explorer level this is changed because the icon is different now which is also right icon image for the file. but the program still does not open and gives the same error. When i right click on the file, Edit is grayed out but "Open" is not grayed out and that is what i am selecting to open the file. i also changed the editor from WebExpression to edit++ and still getting the same thing.

I had a custom editor setup in filezilla: "C:\Program Files\Programmer's Notepad\pn.exe" After upgrading to 3.2.3, it tells me:

The file 'xxx' cannot be opened: The associated program (C:\Program Files\Programmers) could not be found. Please check your filetype associations.

Looks like it's choking on something in the filename... maybe the apostrophe in the path.

When the time to download a file takes more than three (3) hours, the elapsed time counter appears to reset. (I am not sure if it does the same for uploading, but it's possible.)

I executed a long upload last night. It took over 10 hours. With 18 minutes left in the upload, the "elapased time" display showed only 1 hour: 01:32:01 (example only, actual display continued to increase until the upload finished).

We all get the message "critical error" "could not connect to server" Have the newest version. What is the problem? Chuck

Logs in successfully however the directory listing says it is empty. It has been working properly for months this just happened out of nowhere.

I am using FileZilla 2.2.29 to connect to an SFTP server based on commercial SFTP server code from Mocana (www.mocana.com).

When connected to the server, directory listings always show "<Empty directory listing>" in the remote site pane. However from the attached Filezilla log it would seem that the server is sending a perfectly good listing.

Other SFTP clients (openssh, WinSCP and psftp) can list files on the server without this problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I use the 3.1.3.1 client to connect to a Filezilla 0.9.27 beta server as anonymous. The directory is always empty. It is the same case using non-anonymous account. Attached is the message log for the anonymous case.

Other FTP clients do not exhibit the same issue.

I've got the following trouble in all FileZilla versions i had used including the latest (3.5.3)

Empty directory listing doesn't work properly (in both passive and active mode). When i try to open an empty directory or upload a file in an empty directory opening or upload fails in most cases (about 85% – sometimes, seemingly randomly, it passes).

I presume that this is server-related trouble but since the server is a popular public host with very "standard" settings the trouble could be resolved. Some other FTP-client (but not all) are working properly with this server

I've been developing a small FTP Server for use in an embedded project, and have been using the FileZilla Client as my go-to client for testing each part of the project.

I've come across an issue where FileZilla Client shows "Empty directory listing" when using the MLSD command, but works OK if I disable MLSD support and it reverts back to the LIST command.

This issue is only present in the FileZilla Client on Windows. The same version of FileZilla on an Ubuntu machine works fine and directory listing works as expected for both LIST/NLST and MLSD. Additionally, other FTP Clients for Windows work OK when using the MLSD command, so I'm hesitant to believe it's the server that's at fault.

I've attached a copy of the log (in Verbose mode) for your review, although I can't see any errors myself.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you need further information.

Version 2.2.8 and several versions before

During a compile a new version of one of my apps using mingw (which takes a few minutes), the local file window is refreshed and it after that shows nothing.

I suspect that FileZilla steps out once it cannot gain access to files within a certain time frame.

A manual refresh after compile has finished does not make the empty local file window go away. The local directory window remains the same before, during and after.

I'm hosting a FTP server with explicit TLS and recently enabled TLS 1.1/1.2 on it. Now a few users reported to me (and I could reproduce this) that they couldn't connect to the server due to a GnuTLS error being displayed. Other clients using GnuTLS (but those are using newer version from what they've told me) or Windows CryptoAPI/CNG (ie SmartFTP) can still connect flawlessy.

Server: IIS 7.5, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0,1.1,1.2 enabled, explicit mode. (with 1.1/1.2 disabled, it works)

with Speedlimit e.g. parameters Down 400 KiB/s Up 200 KiB/s archive-Files like ZIP or GZ are downloaded in correct file size but are sometimes, but not always corrupt, this depends on the file size. The bigger in size the more sure the file will be corrupt. When trying to extract such a file with 7Zip the error message will be either "Data error in archived_filename. File is broken" or "Can not open ArchiveFilename as an archive" or "An attempt was made to move the file pointer before the beginning of the file."

The problem is we use a hidden unix directory to allow us to share a username/password, yet provide relatively private directories. It achieves the degree of security we require - after all, it is FTP :-)

/pub permissions are 555 (r-xr-xr-x)

/pub/hidden permissions are 711 (rwx--x--x) and it is owned by ROOT

/pub/hidden/whatever permissions are 755 (rwxr-xr-x) and is owned by the ftp account. This allows me to have full access to /pub/hidden/whatever, but (as intended) doesn't let me view the names of any directories in /pub/hidden.

Anyways, FileZilla seems to get stuck traversing down the directory tree when it gets to /pub/hidden, even though my initial directory is set to /pub/hidden/whatever. If I manually traverse down the tree, it shows the contents of the /pub/hidden as <Empty directory listing> & returns to that listing no matter what subdirectory I enter.

Please let me know if you think this is might be resolved in a future release. I would be happy to test any new version for you.

Just found out about this due to a recurrent series of website hacks which seem on investigation to be to this error.

It's really lax. Even if FZ is not being used at the time, any virus or malware can scoop up the ftp addresses, usernames and passwords.

I have been recommending FZ for years, but I am now putting out an advisory to stop using it as a matter of urgency. For those using it to manage a lot of sites, a single infection on a client machine could trigger weeks of server clean-up work.

And I'm frankly shocked by the developer's response to tickets and forum posts on this over the years. It borders on negligence for such an otherwise excellent tool.

In version 3.10.0.1 any existing sites defined in site manager are now set to "Use explicit FTP over TLS if available" instead of whatever settings were previously in use. To clear up the issue they must go toe Site Manager and change the encryption back to the previous setting.

This is causing many problems as users can no longer connect to sites that were previously defined and do not support encryption.

around version 3.10.0, Encryption on all Site Manager connections get reset on the upgrade to Use explicit FTP over TLS if available. it's a real pain to put them back on 200 entries one by one. I begin to wonder if somehow the setting in the XML file got globally set to this new value or the encryption setting simply got ignored due to a bug either in reading or writing the xml file.

if I change the entry, it stays changed, so I am guessing it only happened during the upgrade process.

strangely enough, I looked through the sitemanager.xml file, and nowhere do I see my Encryption type saved. so I guess it got dropped from some previous or current version. edited sample: <Server>

When I try to upload a file and they alredy exists I can see the options in both languages.

There's a grammar blooper in the "Target file found" dialog. I found the line in the code that needs to be changed. I hope the information below is sufficient to fix it. The label is "Please chose an action." Please correct to "Please choose an action." (It's "choose", not "chose".

At the moment when I press Enter after editing a filename (local or remote), the client abrubtly closes. It happens only when I hit the Enter key on the NUMBER PAD. The filename did get changed to what I had typed.

I have an FTP account that can only be accessed using active FTP, but Filezilla enters PASV anyway.

Bom dia, tudo bem? Estou falando do hospital Graacc sobre um erro acontecendo em uma máquina especifica com a última versão do FileZilla 3.55.1.

Acontece que quando o usuário vai mover o arquivo usando a ferramenta de puxar e arrastar o FileZilla fecha sem nenhuma mensagem de erro, simplesmente crasha. Temos em algumas máquinas a versão anterior e não apresenta erro e nessa em especifico na atualização está fechando. Tentei voltar agora a versão anterior e mesmo assim continua fechando.

Se puderem me alertar sobre algo ficarei muito grato, infelizmente não consigo capturar o erro porque ele não apresenta um, simplesmente fecha.

Hi, In version 3.55.0, FileZilla Client on Mac throws error "Could not get reply from fputtygen" when it is trying to import an RSA key to generate the PPK formatted key. In older version, it is successfully importing the key and converting them to PPK format without this error. We are using FileZilla Pro.

Steps:

1. Generate an RSA key using command "ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -C "filezillaPPKconversionissue" -f temp"
2. For password, provide any password like 'test'
3. Open FileZilla 3.55.0 > File > Site Manager
4. Protocol: SFTP
5. host: enter host
6. Logon type: Key file
7. User: enter user
8. Key file: select the private key generated "temp"
9. FileZilla client will prompt to convert key to pPK format. click yes

10 enter key password and confirm

11. enter filename for PPK file like 'testppk' and press SAVE in the file save dialog
12. you will get error popup "Could not get reply from fputtygen"

And started to compile on Fedora 21. There's a file mizzing in the src distribution fzputtygen_interface.h

However I donwloaded the src from SVN and there wasn't any issue when compiling.

The instruction at "0x00a1a8d9" referenced memory at "0xc80202e0". The memory could not be read.

It is 100% reproducible.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Open filezilla, assert that language is set to "Default system language" (otherwise do it and restart filezilla).

2) Settings -> switch to language English (en). Press OK

3) Setting -> switch back to language "Default system language".

Now nearly all calls to menuitems lead to this segfault.

This is no tragedy but I do want to mention it.

First, excuse me for the bad language but I am french, and not really in the IT field. I currently use Filezilla Client 3.3.3. on a PC with windows XP. I never had such a problem since the error read in my ticket's subject. When opening FileZillaI got a window saying 'The Xml doc is not in the right setting : error reading attributes', so the previous favorite settings won't be set, you will run on the basic setting. I got this message whenever I run Filezilla and so must re-shape the windows and my previous read files every time. I tried to uninstall then re-install Filezilla but nothing changed. I checked the forum before posting and though I use both Avast as an Antivirus and ZoneAlarm as a firewall,none of them are blocking the programm to connect to whatever and whenever it wants to.

I believe something is wrong in the xml code. Can you help me fixing it? Regards.

This has been duplicated on two MacBook Pro's at clean build stage.

Using current release of FileZilla, then tried a nightly build and then the previous stable release. The error appeared in all three. Used AppZapper between installs to ensure all files were deleted.

Hello, I'm running Filezilla FTP Client version 3.22.2.2 (64-bit) on Windows 10 and it used to run perfectly until about a week ago. An error caused the program to fail and ever since, I've been getting an error message on startup and then another error message when I try to pull up my Site Manager. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling to correct any file issues but I'm still getting the errors. I'm hoping that I might find a solution by opening a ticket, as I need to be able to use Site Manager. I've attached screenshots of the error messages.

I have been experiencing an error lately when I attempt to drop files into folders that are intended to replace outdated files. Perhaps some context will help...

We operate an online storefront for Neighborhood Health Plan. They have thousands of products which are identified by product codes. For example, one item might be labeled "11020". Each product has a thumbnail and full sized image which we drop into a directory in Filezilla, which we pull from when "creating the product". Thumbnail images have a _2 suffix, with _1 for the full sized image.

Now, lets say they print a new version of 11020 with new graphics, new colors, etc.. In this case we would need to create and drop in new thumbnails. So I would Scale and crop the image, save as 11020_1 and 11020_2, and drop it into the appropriate directory. When I do this, I see a prompt asking me If I want to replace the existing files with these new ones. I click yes to replace, but the file never gets swapped out. I find that the only option I have is to change the suffix to _T and _F for the new file to be available.

There are several other ramifications for this replace file bug, but I figured this was the easiest way to describe it.

I have strange problems with FileZillas connection.

2 days ago the function worked fine and everything was uploaded to my webpage.

Today when I noticed that I need to do some more filetransfers to my websites (in total I have 9-10 websites) at Crystone.com it just give me error;

"530 Sorry, the maximum number of clients (5) from your host are already connected."

So I have done following route cause checks;

1. Re-started FileZilla (several times)
2. Re-started my modem and router
3. Checked wit Crystone support if their servers was ok and everything was set up correctly.

3a. I have tested with log on by "domain" or by "IP". 3b. Changed user login 3c. Enter a new user on the specific domain in the Crystone Control panel.

Please tell if their is anything that I could do more or if it is a bug or error in FileZilla.

Or if it exist a instruction that explains what to do in these cases (couldn't find any at your FAQ)

I work for a division of Honeywell International which operates and supports an IBM Systemz mainframe system running the z/VSE V4.2 Operating System. We are running the latest maintenance levels of all components there. I have been using FileZilla for several years to perform FTPS (FTP over implicit TLS/SSL) transfers from my workstation to/from the z/VSE host's SecureFTP server. Recently the Honeywell Global IT Security team which approves software for use within our environment approved FileZilla V3 for use. Previously I had been using V2.2.32 and based upon the new approval upgraded to V3.2.0.

Using V3.2.0 I can not successfully get past the TLS/SSL handshake when trying to connect to the z/VSE host. V2.2.32 still works fine. I am attaching the "Debug" logs from both V3.2.0 and V2.2.32.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install filezilla client, default settings.
2. Go to Edit -> Settings -> Transfers -> File Types
3. Select all extensions on the list
4. Click on "Remove"

If you are on Windows, it will remove only part of the list. You have to click "Remove" more times until the list is cleared. If you are on Linux (ubuntu tested) there will be an error, but it won't crash and you can continue deleting.

I can provide more info if you can't reproduce this problem.

When remote file search is initiated after connecting to a remote UNIX server; and the relevent file name is put and SERACH button is pressed : the dialog box named "Target file already exists" appears for each file in that remote directory.

e.g. if I serach for test.scr file and the remote directory has 100 .scr files; that dialog box appears again and again for each of the files.

Since, this is only a SEARCH operation and we are not transferring a file; the above metioned dialog box should not appear when we serach for file.

For the last three versions I have had a problem with the transfer queue. I was hoping someone else would have had the problem and it would have gotten fixed...

I finally figured out how and why but not how many. It only seems to show up when it transfer any where from 50+ plus files doesn't seem to matter about the size. But if the server connection seems to hiccup it will start piling up the transfers usually I do 10 at a time. Until all ten transfer spots are full or if the last 1-5 are left then somtimes I can pause them and resume. But most of the time I can't pause or abort. And then it hangs then I get the pop up error message to email you. So that is what it is doing.

Sometimes I can diconnect and that will release them or I have to shut it down and then sometimes they are still in the queue and can reprocess them. Or it really hangs and I have to use the task manager to stop it.

I get an "error writing xml file" and several others attached when I try to launch the program. Downloaded it 3X and same thing each time. Wouldn't quit. Had to force quit to move on. Worked fine on the PC.

Could not load c:/users/me/appdata/roaming/filezilla/filezilla.xml, make sure the file is valid, fot this session default settings will be used and any cahnges to the settings are not persistent

annoying...had it happen on my previous install as well.

I have noticed that when I connect to an MVS host via FileZilla and attempt to display a listing of all members within a partitioned dataset (PDS), some of the members are missing. When I manually log onto the MVS host and browse the PDS, the missing members are there.

The one thing that all of these 'missing' PDS members have in common is that they were last modified by a batch job or outside process, not a physical user/TSO ID. For some reason it seems this prevents FileZilla from recognizing that the members actually do exist within the dataset. If I enter any of the problem members and manually save the file (thus setting the last modified user to my TSO ID) the member is correctly listed in FileZilla.

The mainfraim is running ZOS/MVS...This seems to be an issue of how FTP retrieves member lists from PDSs. It can be very frustrating and has caused me a lot of rework in the past.

Just thought I'd report this as a potential bug.

When I used fzdefaults.xml, I get 2 Group (My Sites and Predefined Sites). When I select a sites in the groupe "Predifined Sites" I get an error messages :

Could not load "", please make sure the file is valid and can be accessed. Any changes made in the site manager will be not saved.

Everything works, but if my last selection was a predifined site I get the error message at startup.

At the start and close of FileZilla I receive a dialogue box (attactehd) that displays an error loading queue.

I always keep the most up to date version of FileZilla running, and this pop-up is a real pain in the ass.

Nothing serious, but would be great if you caould have a look.

On Vista Ultimate, when starting and shutting down FileZilla 3.0.0-rc1 following message is displayed:

"Could not load 'C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\FileZilla\queue.xml', please make sure the file is valid and can be accessed. The queue will not be saved."

Uninstalling and installing FileZilla does not solve the problem.

The path and file queue.xml are existing.

After FileZilla installation, queue.xml is 0 bytes - no entries in the file.

Removing queue.xml and restarting FileZilla solves the problem. New queue.xml is created with following content:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?> <FileZilla3 />

It is possible that queue.xml deployed with the FileZilla setup is empty instead of the expected? xml declaration line (see above).

The same error also occurred on following Beta builds:

3.0.0-beta6_win32 3.0.0-beta7_win32 3.0.0-beta8_win32 3.0.0-beta9_win32 3.0.0-beta10_win32 3.0.0-beta11_win32

First Error on load

and Second error

Could not load "C:\Users\{name}\AppData\Roaming\FileZilla\queue.xml" please make sure the file is valid and can be accessed. The queue will not be saved.

This error first appeared when I upgrade to the previous version and still appears with the latest version as well.

Running win10 on 32 bit platform.

It then applies the default setting.

The filezilla.xml file is found in the above location - the problem appears to be with the offset 9665

Hi, after update to 3.27.1 I lost all saved hosts an return the error in attach

When I try to connect an error pops up: Error loading xml file invalid xml file

I've double checked that data is correct. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, disabling my antivirus, clearing my cache, deleting each xml file in the app data and every time I get the same error.

After the download of the new FileZilla version has been started there is an error message "Timer creation failed.". The download completes successfully despite of that, but there is no progress information shown and the progress bar stays empty.

Upgrading from version 3.2.4 works fine for me. I first saw this message when upgrading from version 3.2.4.1 to 3.2.5-rc1. The issue seems to happen with 3.2.5-rc1 as well.

I get this error message after closing Filezilla

Doesn't make sense to me

The attached file shows the error message that keeps appearing it seems when I have uploaded a file, often when I move between directories. This has been happening now for the last 2 revisions of your code and I am running the latest version as I always do.

When using FileZilla, I randomly get an error message stating that filezilla.xml could not be removed, then in brackets it says the file was removed successfully. See the attached file for a screenshot.

I can't tell what causes this error - it seems to just have begun happening since 3.9.0 was released and sometimes occurs when changing directories, starting an upload, completing an upload, or switching back to the application when using something else. It appears to have no effect on the operation of the software - it's just an annoying error message that frequently appears.

During upgrade from 3.8.1-rc2 to rc3 I got the attached error message. The same message appears for libstdc++-6.dll and libwinpthread-1.dll.

Apparently, the files are in use by Windows Explorer.

If I uninstall FileZilla manually it says that a reboot is required to complete the uninstall.

Maybe the upgrade process should consider whether the uninstall requires a reboot?

Recent VCS versions of FileZilla client show a warning message right upon start which seems to be associated with crashes / core dumps that sporadically take place after establishing connections.

Both the error message and traces of the crash are attached to this report. Debug symbols were disabled, let me know if this isn't enough. The message is the same when wxWidgets are compiled against GTK 3 or 2. The crashes were seen under GTK 2 only so far which may or may not be by incident.

Seen compiling 8034 against wxWidgets from current master on Arch Linux x86_64.

When attempting to change the permissions on a directory on the remote system I get the message "Another remote operation is already in progress, cannot change directory now."

This doesn't appear if I select the "recurse" option.

It seems to change the protection anyway.

Hi!

I updated to version 3.59.0 in Windows 11, but at various times an error occurs that says that more than 20 simultaneous connections are not allowed and it is disconnected. Even changing the value in the settings. In previous versions this problem does not happen. I went back to the previous version 3.57.0 and it works normally.

I am trying to login to FileZilla and I get the following message:

Protocol error: Unknown protocol identifier (0x83 0x83 0x72). Most likely connected to the wrong port. Connection to server closed. My port should be 22. Can you see if that has changed?

I try to install the latest version of FILEZILLA. At the end of the installing process I get the message "File could not be loaded. The XML-document is not well formed. Error reading end tag."

I checked the old tickets and found that #5333 reported the same problem 22 months ago. Do you not intend to fix the bug?
