Really slow File listing local VPN folder

Description
The local file listing takes about a second per item in the folder to show up when I browse "local" VPN folders.
Filezilla is the only program that seems to have this problem browsing my VPN drives.
When I browse local or LAN folders the speed is normal.

Most likely some virus scanner is reading the contents of each file.
Do you use a virus scanner? What happens if you uninstall it for a test?
