Status does not correctly indicate.

I opened a connection to download 2 files. While the 2nd (long file) was downloading the status indicator was wrong.

The most recent status message being "Disconnected from server". That could not be right because the file transfer indicator showed the file was downloading and eventually the file did fully download.

I am using WinXP sp3 with all Microsoft patches and the most recent Filezilla (v 3.4.2.1)

FileZilla uses multiple connections, just your browsing connection or an idle transfer connection got disconnected.
