Not all files upload when sending 400 to 500 small jpegs to website

Version 3.1.1.1
O/S Windows XP Home (Service Pack 2)
When uploading images to my website gallery (typically 400 to 500 images - all v. small JPEG's) not all upload. A black box with a little red square in a small white box appears instead.
Have tried dragging & dropping individual files concerned but this doesn't work.
Have deleted entire gallery & re-tried many times but problem remains.

Check your transfer type, are you accidentally transferring the images (which are binary files) in ASCII mode?
