An RFE about recursive selected file size calculation is available as well:
[ 672604 ] File Sizes Total

This has been implemented in latest FileZilla 3 SVN. You can try a nightly build from 2008-05-29 or later and try yourself, if you cannot wait for the next version to be released. Nightly builds are available at <http://filezilla-project.org/nightly.php>.
Closing this RFE.

I also found that feature very useful (along with the filesize of the selected files) and am a bit sad that it has been removed.
I was often relying on the number of files and their filesize to make sure that all files were correctly transferred, as it often happens that 1 or more files gets only partially transferred when the Internet connection is poor and unstable (which happens often while traveling).
Having that feature back, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the great work of the developers!
