FileZilla 3 exists for GNU/Linux and Unix in general for quite some time already.
But still, not sure if the Return key is best shortcut for this...

I would suggest using a Shortcut that can be pressed with only one hand, like Ctrl+C or F5 (Norton Commander shortcut style).

What about context menu button followed by either D or U (depending on which pane has focus)?

Alt+Down (OS X: Cmd+Down) can be used in the next version to transfer the selected items.
In CuteFTP Pro, I could press CTRL+Page Up to upload and
CTRL+Page Down to download. This worked very well for both
folders and files. In FileZilla, you can press ENTER to
upload and download files, but doing that on a folder only
opens it. Having the same shortcut key to upload both files
and folders would be very nice.
