Description

Running Windows 98SE on a Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop.

I installed the latest version from the HEAnet
(Ireland) mirror and ran it just like I do every other
update to the program. I went to launch the program
(both from the desktop shortcut, and from the actual
EXE in the install directory) and it gave me a runtime
error. sorry i don't have it in front of me... and I
have since installed 2.2.22 on top of it - and the
program runs fine now.

I downloaded the program from Seattle, WA website and
installed it on my main PC (running Windows XP Pro) and it
worked fine. I just got back to my laptop and downloaded
2.2.23 from the Seattle site to try that. It STILL failed
upon running the program.

Here's the error message from the pop-up:

"[Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library]

Runtime Error!

Program C:\Program Files\Filezilla\Filezilla.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it
in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support
team for more information.

OK"

I get exactly the same error with 2.2.23, running on WinMe.
I didn't try under WinXP.

I too tried using 2.2.23 on Windows 98SE, with the following
runtime error message:

"[Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library]

"Runtime Error!

"Program C:\Program Files\Filezilla\Filezilla.exe

"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it
in an unusual way. Please contact the application's
support team for more information."

Same problem with Windows ME. No problem with 2.2.23
running on Windows XP. I have tried three different
machines using Windows 98SE, all of which produce the same
runtime error.

Re-installing 2.2.22 solves the problem.

Having now tried 2.2.23 on seven (7) different machines all
running Windows 98SE, both laptops and desktop towers, I can
confidently report that Filezilla 2.2.23 will not execute
while running on Windows 98SE.

To restate the Windows 98SE runtime error message:

"[Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library]

"Runtime Error!

"Program C:\Program Files\Filezilla\Filezilla.exe

"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate
it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's
support team for more information."

Given the large number of folks running Windows 98SE, and
given the great popularity of Filezilla generally (I
personally go back to Filezilla Beta 1.0, circa April 2001),
perhaps the next release will run happily on Windows 98SE.

Any chance you can try to re-install 2.2.23 and give the
info from the runtime error? I installed 2.2.23 over my
2.2.22 installation and had no problems. It's very hard to
debug something with no error information. Thanks.

Now having downloaded FileZilla_2_2_23a_setup.exe from

Belnet, along with its MD5, and having checked the MD5 sum
against the FileZilla_2_2_23a_setup.exe download file and
found it to be OK, and having once again tested
FileZilla_2_2_23a on all seven (7) Windows 98SE machines
like before, unhappily I must report that I still get the
following runtime error message:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

"Runtime Error!

"Program: C:\PROGRAM FILES\FILEZILLA\FILEZILLA.EXE

"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it

in an unusual way.

"Please contract the application's support team for more

information.

"OK"

Given my limited debugging experience, I was forced to

examine the documentation associated with 2.2.23a and found
the following:

"Version History:

"(For a complete list of changes, please read

http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/changelog.php)

"Version 2.2.23

"New features:

"* Now using Unicode internally. As result, no

longer runs on Windows 9x/ME. This should fix every charset
conversion issue as long as the server supports UTF8.

"Fixed bugs:

"* Fix critical buffer overflow. Remote code

execution might have been possible if connecting to a
malicious server.

"* Fix performance issues on systems with more than

one CPU.

"* Fix problem with UTF-8 detection (2.2.23a)"

Please forgive my probable misinterpretation of the

following, but is it possible that "Now using Unicode
internally. As result, no longer runs on Windows 9x/ME. This
should fix every charset conversion issue as long as the
server supports UTF8." explains why both 2.2.23 and 2.2.23a
no longer run on Windows 98SE, or for that matter, on
Windows ME (which I tested on only one machine), but that
both 2.2.23 and 2.2.23a run very nicely on Windows XP?

As before, reinstalling FileZilla_2_2_22_setup.exe solves

the problem on the seven (7) Windows 98SE machines.

I just tried to install and run the new 2.2.23a and received
the same error trying to run this on my Win98 laptop :(

[Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library]

Runtime Error!

Program C:\Program Files\Filezilla\Filezilla.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it
in an unusual way. Please contact the application's
support
team for more information.

sadly going back to 2.2.22 again.

also, i elected to install the debug files, but how do i get
any information from them about this error message to help
out? or does that only come into play once the program is
running?

Windows 98 is no longer supported. Please update to Windows
2000 or newer.
