#5349 reopened Feature request

remote site address backslash replacer

Reported by: Judas Gutenberg Owned by:
Priority: normal Component: FileZilla Client
Keywords: slashes backslashes Windows Linux address bar Cc:
Component version: Operating system type: Windows
Operating system version: XP SP3

Description

In Windows, if one pastes a linux-style path into the location bar, the OS automatically deals with the fact that the slashes are pointing the wrong way and takes you to the intended location. It would be awesome of FileZilla could do the same thing when someone pastes a Windows-style path into the Remote site location bar. In that case, of course, the backslashes would have to be converted to foreward slashes. This seems like an easy feature to implement and would actually save me a lot of time as I go back and forth between my local Windows file system and the file system on a web server.

On most operating systems, a backslash can be a valid part of a file or subdirectory name.

As such, automatically converting backslashes into slashes is a bad idea since the user would no longer be able to access files and directories containing backslashes.

While it is a valid character, I have never in my life seen a backslash used by someone in a directory name on a system that supports it. But if allowing this to be supported is important, perhaps there could be a way to turn on the substitutions of forward slashes for back slashes in the preferences.

Only because you haven't seen slashes in filenames yet does not mean that others don't have.

...and that's why I've suggested making it an option in settings. It would make Filezilla about 30% more useful to me, and probably lots of others. Perhaps there is another FTP client that provides this option, but I've gotten used to the Filezilla interface and it would take a lot to get me to use something else.

I know it's not the fault of Filezilla's developers that Windows uses backslashes as delimiters between directories in a path, I suppose simply the evolution of Microsoft, divergent from Unix, is to blame.

However, it is really a pain for the end user to have to replace every single backslash with a forward slash in any Windows path you want to paste in Filezilla to open that location in a server.

An option that the user can select to automatically do that replacement when pasting a Windows path would be very welcome by users that NEVER have a backlash as part of a file or subdirectory name.

I just signed up to request this feature and it is my problem too.
Can it please be reconsidered as a must have feature for Windows FileZilla users dealing with Linux servers?
